May 20, 2008 - WIVLA General Membership Meeting
Program: Student Scholars Rebecca Traber and Jennifer Light and ECO Fund Artist: Donna Feinstein
Donna Feinstein, who won the 2008 ECO Fund Award for Visual Artists, will discuss how she used her grant money to further her art.
The ECO Fund is an award for WIVLA members who have at least two consecutive years as a WIVLA member. Each year this award is given to one writer and to one visual artist.
Writing Scholar: Rebecca Traber
Teacher: Angelique Jamail, The Kinkaid School, Private
“I am attending Reed College in Portland, Oregon next semester and am very excited about it! I vacillate between many different career goals, including lawyer or academic, but whatever I do, I would also like to write free lance. I have had one a gold key with scholastic last year, and that's pretty much the only writing competition that I've submitted work to. I am also very involved in national competitive debate, and am ranked as one of the top two or three debaters in the country, and certainly the top girl. In my debate career, I've won the University of Texas tournament, the University of California at Berkeley tournament and tournaments held at the Grapevine high school in Dallas, and both Cinco Ranch and Memorial high schools in Houston.
I've been scribbling my whole life, it seems, but my earliest writing memory was a poem I wrote about a candle when my grandfather died. I was nine at the time and I cannot for the life of me find a copy of the poem, but I remember vividly the process of writing it. I think I remember that poem more than I remember the funeral, which shows how my coping mechanisms function.”
Artistic Scholar: Jennifer Light
Teacher: Susan Sheets, Spring High School, Spring ISD
Jennifer is planning on attending the Maryland Institute College of Art. This is not only a top art school, but provides opportunities for art students to intern with over a thousand major companies and art museums. She looks forward to an eventual career as an illustrator. Jennifer recalls loving to “scribble” as a young child, but did not develop her current interest in art until an elective 10th grade art class when she won an award for her entry in the Houston Rodeo competition.
