On November 18th, I attended the resilience-themed November member reading. At the beginning of the meeting, I was transitioning from my mom-duties and into the call a little late. This put me in a different role than I have been playing. Rather than leading the meeting and running through the agenda of board announcements, I was off camera and mic off, observing.

I enjoy observing as much as I love leading. Different needs are met for me when I am observing. In the observer role, I engage my senses more mindfully, listen more deeply, notice body language and non-verbal clues, and witness my feelings and thought responses with more curiosity.

Over the past two years, I’ve also observed myself develop in the role of president of the board. I accepted the position as a reluctant leader. After being fired in 2017 from my one and only gig as an Executive Director, I still had a lot to heal. I had even more to learn about myself, about WiVLA, and about the way this community of creatives navigate our roles, in all our circles, with our skills and scars and radiant resolve.

Playing the role of board president for WiVLA is a pretty cushy gig. I've been on some boards where there were a couple of doers who carried the load until they burned out. Leadership tended to be more hierarchical and directive. I don't fit well in those spaces. I am too clear about my values and my love of servant leadership, of agency and activity in every position born out of respect for the mission and each community member.

After initially healing layers that made it difficult for me to be seen and trust myself, I began to see clearly enough to be inspired and relieved by the ways this organization truly collaborates as a collection of servant leaders. Imagine being back in school and working on a group project where every student does their part and then some, for the good of the group. With the coordination of each monthly meeting, workshop, annual event, and each new initiative that developed, I saw collaboration, clarity, and ease pave the way. At the helm of each program and project was a servant leader, someone driven by our mission and fueled by mutual respect.

It has been such a joy to play this role. I am in awe of our individual stories of resilience, the way we lead our lives and participate in this organization with compassion, respect, and collaboration. These observations serve as data, proving that it is not only possible, but highly effective, to live and lead with these values.

I hope that I will get the chance to see each of you at our holiday party and celebrate WiVLA's mission and vibrant community!

Writing From the Power of the Senses:
Holiday Sights, Sounds, and Smells - Workshop
with Andreana Binder

A collaboration with Writespace!

Feeling stuck this holiday season and looking for inspiration? Look no further! In this workshop, we will use our five senses along with holiday-themed items (seemingly common from home) to trigger memory and create fresh ideas for new or ongoing writing projects.

We’ll explore and experiment with how the senses are deeply linked with memory—for example, how scent can bring us back to a specific place, moment, or feeling—and how writing with the five senses helps us create concrete details that engage readers.

All you need to bring is a willingness to enjoy your writing experience and your favorite writing tools (paper and pen or laptop). Writers of all levels are welcome.

Andreana Binder is a corporate writer by trade, with a love for the arts and education. Andreana has taught courses in Composition & Rhetoric, Technical Communications, Early American Literature, as well as Creative Writing at Lone Star College and Houston Community College. Binder has a bachelor’s in Poetry from the University of Houston and a Masters in Creative Writing-Poetry from Antioch University. As a graduate student, Andreana was co-creator and editor for The Sylvan Echo Online Literary Journal. Despite having studied poetry, Andreana cannot resist writing nonfiction essays and dabbling in short fiction. Her poetry has been published in Temenos and Fawlt Magazine,as well as creative nonfiction essays in Pebble Lake Review and N/A Lit Journal.

Margaret Anderson

I write nonfiction for my work as a trainer, author and consultant specializing in persuasion, consensus building, and related communication skills.I write fiction for fun. So much fun, in fact, that I incorporate fiction in my nonfiction books with situations and dialogues demonstrating use of the communication skills taught in the books.

As for the fun, in 2005, my short story Duet for Flute and Phantom won first place for genre fiction in the Writer's Digest  Annual Competition. I combined Duet with several other unusual love (or lack thereof) stories, each followed by study notes on how the characters communicated well, or could have done better, in Love on the Rocks with a Twist.

I had been building toward a topic very dear to my heart, Women Can Renew the World IF… and So Can You. Here again, you'll find realistic fictional examples and practice exercises.

The Man In the Mirror—an Independent Spirit in a Regimented World recounts my father's experiences in the Navy in World War II. Practice in fiction writing enabled me to engage the reader in his story.

I entered last year's WIVLA  paired visual and literary works exhibit with Chris Rogers. I wrote Sophie Saves the Day, featuring a doggie protagonist who can think like a human and understand human speech. Chris painted the darling artwork. I enjoyed writing that story so much that I am now working on a complete book of pure fiction about Sophie the Marvelous Maltipoo.

I have no idea what's next on the horizon for me, but whatever it is, I intend to make it joyous.

Deborah newest book, Douglass Houghton Michigan's Pioneer Geologist, Doctor and Teacher is available for preorder. It is a biography written for middle grades (4-8).

"Deborah K Frontiera paints the life of Douglass Houghton in an engaging and masterful way, filling the pages with glimpses into what life would have looked like for one of Michigan's greatest pioneers."

Her publisher at Modern History Press has also asked her to be a series editor for more books to come on Michigan pioneers after a search revealed that there are very few biographies of important Michigan people published for that age range, especially famous women (and men) in the Upper Peninsula.

She looks forward to the challenge and to designing a section at the end of each with discussion questions and projects for teachers and home-schooling parents to use. Her background as a retired teacher will be a big help in that area.

Synkroniciti is Open
for Written and Visual Art Submissions
Synkroniciti is a quarterly online arts journal. They accept work in a variety of media across the visual, literary and performing arts spectrum.

Audacity may be interpreted as insolence, imprudence or unconventionality, even rudeness. While it implies a degree of cheekiness,  it also connotes fearlessness and intrepid daring. The act of expressing oneself with authenticity is audacious, especially when it reveals uniqueness and nonconformity.

For good or ill, audacity requires courage and willingness to take chances. We are seeking work that illustrates challenges to conventional thinking and resistance to hostile circumstances, exploring the connections between risk-taking and autonomy.

What does it mean to be fearless, to subvert expectations, or simply take up space?

Submissions for their Audacity issue are now open. Contests will be held in poetry ($75), flash fiction ($75) and for the cover ($100).
Theme: Audacity
Deadline: 1/15/2026
Fee: $3 per submission
