WiVLA's mission is to provide an inspiring forum for women to explore and advance their creative development, to promote their work in the marketplace, and to infuse the community with their spirit of cooperation and invention.

I never tire of reading this or hearing it read.  This statement perfectly embodies who we are as a community of artists.  Unless you have read further on our website under “Why WiVLA,” you may have missed the next paragraph.

Women in the Visual and Literary Arts (WiVLA) is a nurturing place for sharing and growth, where visual artists, writers and other creatives meet in an atmosphere of support and mutual respect.

This statement, I believe, is as important as the first.  WiVLA is indeed a “nurturing place for sharing and growth.”  It is a community which offers safety, support and mutual respect.

I have been a member of WiVLA for over ten years and have served on the Board and in other capacities.  During those ten years, there have been some conflicts, some disgruntled members, some failures, and so many more successes.  In the midst, I have never felt a sense of competition or jealously coming from any WiVLA member.  What I have felt is encouragement, support, and a tremendous sense of cheering each other on.  We want to see our fellow artists and writers succeed in whatever way they choose to express their creativity.  Our community is a vibrant one that has fun together, loves to be together, either in person or online, and encourages each other to achieve their goals.

As I represent WiVLA as Board President, I continually look for opportunities to talk about WiVLA.  Along with giving information about our current exhibits or competitions, or why and how to join, these are the tenants I love to bring forth.  The art world can be a harsh place of criticism that can lead to second guessing ourselves as creatives.  Women can be especially critical or jealous of each other.  The women of WiVLA strive to be kind, non-judgmental and encouraging.  This is the essence of our nurturing place cultivated over decades of supporting each other and finding ways to showcase our members’ creative works.

As you peruse through this month’s newsletter, you will find platforms that invite you to “put yourself out there.” Please know that each event is designed to help you grow. It is a rare and sacred occurrence to find a nurturing place of safety that encourages women to find and use their own voice. WiVLA is that place.

Respectfully submitted,

Susan Salter, WiVLA Board President

Power, an Anthology Competition

WiVLA is sponsoring an anthology competition for WiVLA members and Texas writers who identify as women. The theme of our competition is POWER.

POWER is the force that rises not only in command but in courage. The spark that moves through our words and bodies, and lives in our belonging. It is the quiet knowledge of one’s worth, the trembling moment before a choice is made that changes everything. Power can uplift a single voice or surge through many—Power is a human inheritance. It is a rebellion, a remembering. Power lives in the body’s stride, in the mind’s clarity, in the collective’s roar. In these works, power is not merely held or taken; it is awakened, conjured, shared, misused, reclaimed—in an ever-shifting current that shapes who we are and who we dare to become.

The following categories comprise the competition and the published anthology:

  • Fiction: <1,000 words
  • Non-Fiction: <1,000 words
  • Flash Fiction: <500 words
  • Flash Non-Fiction: <500 words
  • Poetry: 1-3 poems/entry
  • Short Stories (fiction or non-fiction): < 3000 words
  • Cover Art: One image per entry
  • Title: 1-3 titles/entry
Outside of the judged categories, we are also looking for black and white art for the interior of the anthology. These should be on the theme of POWER. There is no cost to submit the black and white art. Please send your black and white images to literary@wivla.org

And check out our 2025 anthology, The Fire Within, on Amazon for examples of interior art we are looking for!

https://www.amazon.com/Fire-Within-Resilience-Literary-Anthology/dp/B0GCNK9JM3

Maximum number of entries: 3 literary categories per person.

Except for the title competition, which is free, each entry is $20. Members of WiVLA enjoy a discounted entry fee. Not a member? Join WiVLA now!

Important entry guidelines

  • No simultaneous submissions. No previously published work.

  • For the anthology, “published work” means published in print in North America or published on the Internet in electronic journals, e-zines, academic websites, and other “public” or “official” websites.

Works posted on personal blogs or websites will be considered on a case-by-case basis. We ask that authors be honest about web postings. (If a work is discovered to have been posted or published elsewhere—and not openly acknowledged by the author in advance—we will remove it from consideration.)

  • Select the member entry fee only if you are a current WiVLA member. If one or more submissions are made at the member-discounted price and the person submitting the entry is not a current member of WiVLA at the time of entry, the entries will be disqualified, and the fees will be forfeited. No refunds will be issued.

  • Submissions using AI-generated content and art will be disqualified, and no refunds will be issued. Please submit only original stories written by you.

  • In the poetry category, only written entries are eligible. Ekphrastic, erasure, blackout poems, or other works accompanied by or based on images are not eligible.

  • Submit a double-spaced Word document (.docx/.doc) using the Times New Roman 12pt font. Do not submit a PDF.

Schedule

  • The competition runs from May 15 through July 31, 2027. Watch for the submission link, coming soon!

  • Judging will take place during the Fall of 2027.

  • Results will be sent to participants during the first week of January 2027.

  • Copies of the anthology will be sent to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners of each category during the first week of February 2027.

  • The Readings and Book Launch Party will be held on International Women’s Day, March 8, 2027, during a Zoom celebration.

Judging

Judging of literary submissions will be done anonymously (blind) by WiVLA literary members.

The WiVLA members will vote on the Cover Art and Title competitions.

Winners

The winners will be notified in January 2027. The first three places and honorable mentions in each literary category will be included in the anthology and published in paperback, hardcover, and Kindle formats on Amazon. Each author will retain all rights to her story for future use. WiVLA will be the sole recipient of royalties from the sale of the books.

Celebration

The book launch and celebration will be held on Zoom on March 8, 2027, National Women's Day.

HEART of Houston

A Juried Exhibition of Works by Houston Artists hosted by Winter Street Studios at Sawyer Yards

August 29 - October 31, 2026

Overview

HEART of Houston is a community-centered exhibition hosted by Winter Street Studios celebrating the creative voices of artists working in the Greater Houston Area. This exhibition invites artists to share work that reflects the spirit, complexity, culture, and character of Houston — a city shaped by diversity, resilience, connection, and ongoing transformation.  We're looking for Houston artists who have a love for our city and create art that exemplifies that love.

We are seeking artwork that engages with Houston as a place, a memory, a community, a landscape, or an idea. Submissions may respond directly or indirectly to Houston culture, lived experience, neighborhood identity, civic life, traditions, stories, and the many visual and emotional textures that define life in our city.

Exhibition Theme

Houston is not one thing — it is many things at once. It is neighborhood and skyline, heritage and innovation, struggle and celebration, movement and rootedness. HEART of Houston invites artists to reflect on that multiplicity through work that expresses personal connection and collective experience.

Synkroniciti Classes: July 2026
Taught by Katherine McDaniel

Saturday, 7/25: 10am-Noon or Wednesday, 7/29: 6:30-8:30pm via Zoom

Permission to Feel: Ekphrastic Writing with Frida Kahlo

$70.00 USD/ $55 USD for Synkroniciti Subscribers and Synkroniciti Contest Winners

This workshop, part of Synkroniciti’s “Permission” series, enters the vivid, uncompromising world of Frida Kahlo. Kahlo’s paintings confront the realities of embodiment in a surreal way: the body as battleground, as prison, as shrine. Her paintings pulse with grief, desire, and resilience counterpointed with the joy of creating and a deep love for nature. She teaches us that feeling deeply is not a weakness but a form of creative courage.

Through reflection on Kahlo’s life and art, followed by generative writing, participants will explore how the body’s truths fuel creative expression. Kahlo’s self‑portraits and symbolic narratives invite us to speak from the body, to trust our inner landscapes, and to let feeling guide the creative act.

Frida Kahlo gives us permission to feel: to write from the truth of our experience, to honor vulnerability, and to transform pain and grief into art.

Open to all skill levels from beginner to advanced.

Would you like a private coaching/editing session? These can be held via Zoom, over e-mail, or in person if you are in the Houston area. Sessions are $90 an hour. There is a $15 discount for current subscribers and any artist (visual, literary or performing) who has won a Synkroniciti contest. Katherine is happy to help with all literary forms and also helps visual and performing artists with artist statements. She can also help you organize a book or put together a reading. After sign-up, you will be contacted via email to set up your plan.

July Member Meeting - Small Art Talk: Conversations with Artists - Diana Clark

Small Art Talk is an ongoing interview series created to make artists and art more accessible to the public, inspire fellow creatives, and help bridge the gap between artists and collectors. Through candid conversations, artists share the stories behind their work, the challenges they have faced, the experiences that have shaped their artistic journeys, as well as the advice, lessons, and inspirations they have gathered along the way.

Created and hosted by Diana Clark, the series aims to foster meaningful connections within the art community and encourage a deeper appreciation for the creative process. To date, Small Art Talk has featured visual and performing artists, including painters, sculptors, photographers, educators, musicians, and notable guests such as former astronaut Terry Virts. Each interview offers a unique glimpse into the artist's world, helping audiences connect with the people behind the artwork.

In this presentation, Diana will share the inspiration behind Small Art Talk, memorable moments from her conversations with artists, and insights into how storytelling can strengthen connections between artists, collectors, and the broader community.

June Member Meeting

In June, we heard the trials and tribulations of building an outdoor mosaic by WiVLA artists with no experience in making a mosaic! It’s been an epic journey of about 3 years - a definite learning experience but one filled with a lot of laughter along with the hard work. Life often got in the way, and mistakes were made - one step forward and 2 (or 3) steps back seemed to be the working method.

View June's member meeting recording on WIVLA's YouTube channel.

Natalie Shipula
Natalie Shipula is an Air Force veteran, senior graphic designer, and multidisciplinary artist whose story is one of resilience and constant reinvention. She earned her Bachelor’s in Fine Art from Youngstown State University and her Master’s in Arts Management from the University of Oklahoma.

A serious car accident in 2019, followed by the upheaval of the pandemic, left Natalie questioning her identity as both an artist and a designer. The isolation of those years pushed her to confront childhood trauma and the lingering effects of a job that had left her confidence shaken. When she was nearly ready to give up on art entirely, an opportunity to design at Lone Star College came her way. Working with students reignited her creative spark and helped her rediscover the joy of making art.

Now, her work centers on the pursuit of happiness, beauty, and love, rather than focusing on the difficulties she faced. Through this process, Natalie began to reclaim her creative voice and sense of purpose. Today, Natalie is the Senior Graphics Designer at the HEALTH Research Institute at the University of Houston, where she focuses on bringing clarity and thoughtful storytelling to research-driven design.

She also runs her freelance studio, NShipula–Creative, and regularly shares her artwork at festivals in Houston and soon across Texas. Much of the art Natalie shares is watercolor—a medium she stumbled upon by chance while working on a design project. This took on special meaning for her when she began painting her mother’s pet chickens just before her mother passed away in 2016. Natalie painted these pieces in hopes of giving her mother something beautiful while she was in the hospital. Though her mother never got to see them, making the paintings became a meaningful and healing part of Natalie’s journey as an artist. Grounded by the discipline she learned in the military and inspired by a renewed sense of purpose, Natalie is dedicated to showing up as her most authentic self—artist, designer, and human.

Cherie Acosta is thrilled that her textile works A Place Between and Unbound a Soft Awakening will be part of the Unraveling Habitats Exhibit at the Visions Museum of Textile Art in San Diego, California January 30th - May 22, 2027.  The exhibit explores the fragile, shifting relationship between living beings and the environments they inhabit.  This exhibition brings together works that reflect on how habitats - natural, urban, and psychological-are constructed, altered, and sometimes undone. She uses a majority of recycled, and dyed textiles to create the work.

She is also working on some pieces to be part of work done at the Texas Medical Center (TMC3) in February of 2027. This work explores the cellular level of diseases.

Synkroniciti is Open
for Written and Visual Art Submissions

Announcing Synkroniciti's new theme, “Dignity,” open May 1 -  July 15, 2026.

Synkroniciti invites literary, visual, and performing artists to explore the concept of dignity.

Dignity connotes a way of being full of seriousness, self‑control, and integrity—a steadiness signaling capability and self‑respect. Yet this version of dignity can also create distance, obscuring vulnerability and limiting connection.

At its most essential, dignity is far less performative: it is the quality of being worthy of honor and respect. But how do we decide who is worthy? What happens when dignity becomes entangled with status, manners, or proximity to power rather than with intrinsic human value?

We are interested in work that probes the inner landscapes of memory and imagination and the dynamics of community and individuality to reveal how we perceive dignity: how it manifests, how it falters, and how it shifts. We are especially drawn to the places where dignity diverges from power and privilege, and to the moments when dignity is withheld, restored, or reclaimed.

For this issue, we invite you to consider dignity not as a fixed ideal but as a living, evolving relationship between self and community. How do we recognize and prioritize dignity in society and how do we safeguard the dignity residing in ourselves?
