A CAT ON THE PATIO

I receive a weekly newsletter from Higher Vibrations, an online program designed by Brian Withers based upon his book, Higher Vibrations for a Healthy Happy and Harmonious Relationship.  He coaches on empowerment for “those who want to take charge of every aspect of their life.”  Sounds daunting?  Well in this President’s message I want to bring forth just one aspect of Mr. Withers’ premises.

“Your energy changes when you decide something is done.”

To quote him directly:

“There has been a growing focus on decision fatigue and how unfinished tasks drain attention.”

Think about something you have not fully decided.

A direction you are unsure about.

A situation you have not resolved

A choice you keep revisiting.

It stays in the background.

You return to it repeatedly.

You reconsider it from different angles.

You delay closing it.

Even when you are focused on something else, part of your attention remains tied to it.

That creates drag.”

“Many people are not overwhelmed by effort alone.

They are overwhelmed by what is still open.

Unfinished decisions.
Unclear outcomes.
Situations that have not been mentally closed.

These open loops carry weight.”

I speak with many women who express their desire to “do something creative.”   They say, “I want to start painting (or writing) but just can’t seem to find the time.”   Or “I don’t have enough room in my home to set up a workspace.”  Or “When I retire, I’ll have more time to do what I want.”  And even “What if I’m not any good at what I want to do?”

What Brian Withers advocates is these unmet desires are creating “drag.”  That niggling idea in the back of your brain carries weight and is dragging you down, creating doubt in oneself which leads to stress.

For many years I followed Elisabeth Elliott, a missionary, author and speaker.  She hosted a weekly podcast “Gateway to Joy.”  I remember one quote from her that has helped me through some times of resistance or indecision.

Do The Next Thing: That Thing Hanging Over You

I am a visual artist. My medium is encaustic painting, sculpture and collage.  But what I’ve kept under wraps is that I have written plays, sermons, thesis papers, and poetry.  Even so, I’ve never called myself a “writer.”  I’ve also been writing “Morning Pages” (The Artist’s Way) for decades.  Last week, as I was sitting at my desk about to write my daily “page,” I looked out my back window onto my patio.  To myself, I thought, every once in a while, a cat shows up on my patio.  I returned to the page, looked out again, and there was the cat, as if I had summoned it!  The next thought was this little event is something worth writing about.  I begin to write a line of poetry, then another came, and another.  Here is my poem:

A Cat On the Patio

Early morning fog.

Early morning practice.

Light candle, sage stick,

read poetry, write pages.

Gaze on my patio.

A cat sometimes shows up.

Look again.  There she is!

Black and white, sniffing the air.

She’s gone in a moment.

A moment worth remembering.

Me.  Self-proclaimed non-writer.

Yet plays, poems, sermons, stories,

happened then.

Now the words are returning.

Because I am returning.

A cat creeps onto my patio.

I invite her to stay.

This one gaze on the patio, seeing a cat, writing a poem, led to writing six more poems.  They just came.  I made room for them.  I did the next thing.  An energy shift occurred. I still don’t know if I’m ready to call myself a “writer” but I’m inviting her to stay for a while. Here’s a quote that I use as a salutation on my emails.

It's never too late to be what you might have been.

George Elliott

There are many accomplished women artists and writers in WiVLA who, against all odds, have conquered resistance and excuses. One small step led to another step that blossomed into a vibrant creative life.  One wonderful way to get the creative juices flowing is by being in the presence of other creatives.  WiVLA is a safe and nurturing place to do so.

Respectfully submitted,

Susan Salter

WiVLA Board President

Power, an Anthology Competition

WiVLA is sponsoring an anthology competition for WiVLA members and Texas writers who identify as women. The theme of our inaugural competition is POWER.

POWER is the force that rises not only in command but in courage. The spark that moves through our words and bodies, and lives in our belonging. It is the quiet knowledge of one’s worth, the trembling moment before a choice is made that changes everything. Power can uplift a single voice or surge through many—Power is a human inheritance. It is a rebellion, a remembering. Power lives in the body’s stride, in the mind’s clarity, in the collective’s roar. In these works, power is not merely held or taken; it is awakened, conjured, shared, misused, reclaimed—in an ever-shifting current that shapes who we are and who we dare to become.

The following categories comprise the competition and the published anthology:

  • Fiction: <1,000 words
  • Non-Fiction: <1,000 words
  • Flash Fiction: <500 words
  • Flash Non-Fiction: <500 words
  • Poetry: 1-3 poems/entry
  • Short Stories (fiction or non-fiction): < 3000 words
  • Cover Art: One image per entry
  • Title: 1-3 titles/entry
Outside of the judged categories, we are also looking for black and white art for the interior of the anthology. These should be on the theme of POWER. There is no cost to submit the black and white art. Please send your black and white images to literary@wivla.org

And check out our 2025 anthology, The Fire Within, on Amazon for examples of interior art we are looking for!

https://www.amazon.com/Fire-Within-Resilience-Literary-Anthology/dp/B0GCNK9JM3

Maximum number of entries: 3 literary categories per person.

Except for the title competition, which is free, each entry is $20. Members of WiVLA enjoy a discounted entry fee. Not a member? Join WiVLA now!

Important entry guidelines

  • No simultaneous submissions. No previously published work.

  • For the anthology, “published work” means published in print in North America or published on the Internet in electronic journals, e-zines, academic websites, and other “public” or “official” websites.

Works posted on personal blogs or websites will be considered on a case-by-case basis. We ask that authors be honest about web postings. (If a work is discovered to have been posted or published elsewhere—and not openly acknowledged by the author in advance—we will remove it from consideration.)

  • Select the member entry fee only if you are a current WiVLA member. If one or more submissions are made at the member-discounted price and the person submitting the entry is not a current member of WiVLA at the time of entry, the entries will be disqualified, and the fees will be forfeited. No refunds will be issued.

  • Submissions using AI-generated content and art will be disqualified, and no refunds will be issued. Please submit only original stories written by you.

  • In the poetry category, only written entries are eligible. Ekphrastic, erasure, blackout poems, or other works accompanied by or based on images are not eligible.

  • Submit a double-spaced Word document (.docx/.doc) using the Times New Roman 12pt font. Do not submit a PDF.

Schedule

  • The competition runs from May 15 through July 31, 2027. Watch for the submission link, coming soon!

  • Judging will take place during the Fall of 2027.

  • Results will be sent to participants during the first week of January 2027.

  • Copies of the anthology will be sent to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners of each category during the first week of February 2027.

  • The Readings and Book Launch Party will be held on International Women’s Day, March 8, 2027, during a Zoom celebration.

Judging

Judging of literary submissions will be done anonymously (blind) by WiVLA literary members.

The WiVLA members will vote on the Cover Art and Title competitions.

Winners

The winners will be notified in January 2027. The first three places and honorable mentions in each literary category will be included in the anthology and published in paperback, hardcover, and Kindle formats on Amazon. Each author will retain all rights to her story for future use. WiVLA will be the sole recipient of royalties from the sale of the books.

Celebration

The book launch and celebration will be held on Zoom on March 8, 2027, National Women's Day.

For questions on the competition, please email literary@wivla.org.

Synkroniciti Classes: June 2026
Taught by Katherine McDaniel

Saturday, 6/20: 10am-Noon or Wednesday, 6/24: 6:30-8:30pm via Zoom
Permission to Be Tender: Ekphrastic Writing with Henry Ossawa Tanner
$70.00 USD/ $55 USD for Synkroniciti Subscribers and Synkroniciti Contest Winners

The first workshop in Synkroniciti’s “Permission” series opens with the gentle, luminous world of American painter Henry Ossawa Tanner. Tanner’s paintings are filled with quiet tenderness: a child leaning into an elder’s steady presence, a room lit softly from within, a moment of stillness held with reverence. His work honors the small gestures that reveal our shared humanity and the light that makes those moments visible.

Through guided reflection on Tanner’s life and selected works, followed by generative writing, participants will explore tenderness as a powerful creative force. Tanner’s interiors, nocturnes, and intimate scenes invite us to slow down, soften, and meet the world with compassion.

Henry Ossawa Tanner gives us permission to be tender: to write from gentleness, to see with empathy, and to begin a new creative journey with an open, human heart. Open to all skill levels from beginner to advanced.

Poetry as a therapeutic practice
$70.00 USD/ $55 USD for Synkroniciti Subscribers and Synkroniciti Contest Winners

We will use image prompts to slow down and quiet our mind so that we write from a place of openness and awareness. By using intuition and free association, we invite the subconscious to take a larger part in our writing.

Geared towards poets, from established to aspiring.

June Member Meeting: Smither Park Mosaic Update

'The Muse' is an imagined depiction of a Goddess of Art and Literature. Calliope is the Greek Muse of Literature and Athena was the inspiration for artisans. So maybe we can combine the two and call her WiVLA?

The presentation will detail the trials and tribulations of building an outdoor mosaic by artists with no experience in making a mosaic! It’s been an epic journey of about 3 years - a definite learning experience but one filled with a lot of laughter along with the hard work. Life often got in the way, and mistakes were made - one step forward and 2 (or 3) steps back seemed to be the working method.

We were guided by our mentor, Sharon Plummer an experienced mosaic artist, and are very grateful for her encouragement, patience and generosity in teaching us best practices in mosaic making.

A big shout-out to Keith Miller who did much of the heavy lifting and engineering work and we consider him an honorary WiVLA member.

Presenters:

Sally Worthington

I was an art school dropout, but have been making up for it ever since! I’ve made works in bronze, clay and paper mache, and also love to paint and draw. It’s been a pleasure working with these amazing women!

Anne Mabry

I am a retired art teach living and making art in Houston. Although I have worked on several murals, this is my first experience working with mosaics. It’s been loads of fun!

Deborah Horwitz

As a retired art teacher and architectural designer, I keep making art. I became interested in mosaics while living in Italy studying restoration architecture. I have learned so much and enjoyed the experience of working with our fearless leader Sally and Team Jean, Anne and Keith on creating ‘Her Majesty’.

Jean King

I am an artist, art educator, and author. I was a triple recipient of the Fund for Teachers Fellowship and a Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund Fellow. I live in Houston Texas with my husband Joel, Leonora Cattington and Max the Bolognese.

Abby Kesington
I am a Houston-based poet shaped by my Nigerian roots and my American present. I write about resilience, identity, social justice, and personal transformation. Drawn to small natural moments that hold big emotional truths, my poems tend to reveal themselves gently. Having lived between cultures for much of my life, themes of migration and belonging naturally find their way into my work, which I strive to approach with emotional honesty.

Before focusing on poetry, I worked as a journalist in Lagos and studied Political Science. Both experiences taught me to pay attention to the subtle stories happening beneath the surface.

I am the author of the poetry collection Finish Line. My work has appeared in The Bayou Review, where “The Game” and “Runway” were featured in the Fall 2024 edition. I also contributed “A Legacy of Freedom” to Wole Soyinka: The Herald at 90, a bilingual anthology honoring the Nobel laureate. Most recently, my poem “Finding Me” appeared in the WiVLA anthology The Fire Within: Stories, Poems and Essays of Women’s Resilience. Some of my poems have also been shared on platforms like Poetry.com.

I write mostly in free verse, using imagery from nature and the city to mirror emotional landscapes. My work explores anxiety, displacement, and perseverance, and I hope my poems speak to anyone who has ever felt "in-between" or in search of home.

Synkroniciti is Open
for Written and Visual Art Submissions

Announcing Synkroniciti's new theme, “Dignity,” open May 1 -  July 15, 2026.

Synkroniciti invites literary, visual, and performing artists to explore the concept of dignity.

Dignity connotes a way of being full of seriousness, self‑control, and integrity—a steadiness signaling capability and self‑respect. Yet this version of dignity can also create distance, obscuring vulnerability and limiting connection.

At its most essential, dignity is far less performative: it is the quality of being worthy of honor and respect. But how do we decide who is worthy? What happens when dignity becomes entangled with status, manners, or proximity to power rather than with intrinsic human value?

We are interested in work that probes the inner landscapes of memory and imagination and the dynamics of community and individuality to reveal how we perceive dignity: how it manifests, how it falters, and how it shifts. We are especially drawn to the places where dignity diverges from power and privilege, and to the moments when dignity is withheld, restored, or reclaimed.

For this issue, we invite you to consider dignity not as a fixed ideal but as a living, evolving relationship between self and community. How do we recognize and prioritize dignity in society and how do we safeguard the dignity residing in ourselves?

WOW! is a global magazine designed to support women's creativity, energy, blood, sweat, and tears throughout all stages of the writing process. We envision Wow! being a favorite watering hole for professionals, the up-and-coming, and the recipients of our labors--the avid readers.
Our concept is unique, as it fills in the missing gap between writing websites and women's magazines. We are dedicated to raising the overall standards within the writing community, and devote an active profile within writing industry associations, organizations and websites.
