I don’t know about you, but I can’t get enough of being outside right now. Whether it’s taking a walk, working in the garden, or wandering around looking at plants just poking their heads above the ground, reaching for the warmth of the sun. I’m reveling in the myriad shades of green, noticing how the light and wind affect the color.

I’ve taken many classes from Paula Roland, a brilliant and generous teacher of Encaustic Monoprinting. She is the original creator of the Encaustic Hot Box on which I make way too many prints. In her recent newsletter she wrote about a concept named Biophilia. Paula learned about Biophilia  from Bjork, an Icelandic artist, who made an album by that name. She describes this concept as “the deep, almost instinctive pull we feel toward living things, organic forms, light filtering through leaves, magnificent trees, the spiral of a shell.” Paula goes on to write, “It’s not just a feeling; scientists believe that humans have a genetic need to connect with nature. In fact, biophilic design has been found to support cognitive function, physical health, and psychological well-being.” I’m truly indebted to her for introducing this concept to me, and now to you.

Edward O. Wilson, in his book Biophilia (1984), defines biophilia as the "innate tendency to focus on life and lifelike processes.” He argued that "to explore and affiliate with life is a deep and complicated process in mental development. To an extent still undervalued in philosophy and religion, our existence depends on this propensity, our spirit is woven from it, hope rises on its currents"... “to the degree that we come to understand other organisms, we will place a greater value on them, and on ourselves"

I see this concept exemplified over and over again by the visual and literary artists of WiVLA. Look at the exquisite botanical lumen prints of Melody Locke that “shimmer with light, color, and emotion.” Or Deborah Ellington’s glass creations that “reflect nature and natural phenomenon (as) they investigate patterns, movement and symbolism.” Gladys Mae Bullock in her poem “Nature” writes about the “joy that comes from birds’ songs, the calmness that comes from the waves of the water, the beauty that comes from the brightness of a full moon…” I could fill up many pages with other examples of biophiliac works by members of WiVLA. But you can see and hear them at many upcoming events written about in this newsletter.

There are many other aspects of this strange and glorious phenomenon, Biophilia….fractals, the Fibonacci sequence, the Golden Mean….way too much to delve into in this writing. I have used at least parts of these concepts in some of my work. Some of you who know me well, know that I wear a Nautilus around my neck which to me is a powerful symbol of transformation and the eternal cycle of rebirth. It’s one small way I portray to the world my love and care for our troubled, yet beautiful planet.

As we continue into the glories of Spring, we, as artists, can love the planet through our work and relationships with our fellow artists. The evidence I see in WiVLA is that we are ALL Biophiliacs.

Power, an Anthology Competition

WiVLA is sponsoring an anthology competition for WiVLA members and Texas writers who identify as women. The theme of our inaugural competition is POWER.

POWER is the force that rises not only in command but in courage. The spark that moves through our words and bodies, and lives in our belonging. It is the quiet knowledge of one’s worth, the trembling moment before a choice is made that changes everything. Power can uplift a single voice or surge through many—Power is a human inheritance. It is a rebellion, a remembering. Power lives in the body’s stride, in the mind’s clarity, in the collective’s roar. In these works, power is not merely held or taken; it is awakened, conjured, shared, misused, reclaimed—in an ever-shifting current that shapes who we are and who we dare to become.

The following categories comprise the competition and the published anthology:

  • Fiction: <1,000 words
  • Non-Fiction: <1,000 words
  • Flash Fiction: <500 words
  • Flash Non-Fiction: <500 words
  • Poetry: 1-3 poems/entry
  • Short Stories (fiction or non-fiction): < 3000 words
  • Cover Art: One image per entry
  • Title: 1-3 titles/entry

Maximum number of entries: 3 literary categories per person.

Except for the title competition, which is free, each entry is $20. Members of WiVLA enjoy a discounted entry fee. Not a member? Join WiVLA now!

Important entry guidelines

  • No simultaneous submissions. No previously published work.

  • For the anthology, “published work” means published in print in North America or published on the Internet in electronic journals, e-zines, academic websites, and other “public” or “official” websites.

Works posted on personal blogs or websites will be considered on a case-by-case basis. We ask that authors be honest about web postings. (If a work is discovered to have been posted or published elsewhere—and not openly acknowledged by the author in advance—we will remove it from consideration.)

  • Select the member entry fee only if you are a current WiVLA member. If one or more submissions are made at the member-discounted price and the person submitting the entry is not a current member of WiVLA at the time of entry, the entries will be disqualified, and the fees will be forfeited. No refunds will be issued.

  • Submissions using AI-generated content and art will be disqualified, and no refunds will be issued. Please submit only original stories written by you.

  • In the poetry category, only written entries are eligible. Ekphrastic, erasure, blackout poems, or other works accompanied by or based on images are not eligible.

  • Submit a double-spaced Word document (.docx/.doc) using the Times New Roman 12pt font. Do not submit a PDF.

Schedule

  • The competition runs from May 15 through July 31, 2027. Watch for the submission link, coming soon!

  • Judging will take place during the Fall of 2027.

  • Results will be sent to participants during the first week of January 2027.

  • Copies of the anthology will be sent to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners of each category during the first week of February 2027.

  • The Readings and Book Launch Party will be held on International Women’s Day, March 8, 2027, during a Zoom celebration.

Judging

Judging of literary submissions will be done anonymously (blind) by WiVLA literary members.

The WiVLA members will vote on the Cover Art and Title competitions.

Winners

The winners will be notified in January 2027. The first three places and honorable mentions in each literary category will be included in the anthology and published in paperback, hardcover, and Kindle formats on Amazon. Each author will retain all rights to her story for future use. WiVLA will be the sole recipient of royalties from the sale of the books.

Celebration

The book launch and celebration will be held on Zoom on March 8, 2027, National Women's Day.

For questions on the competition, please email literary@wivla.org.

2026 Collaboration

Theme:  Wild

This theme, WILD, speaks to what is untamed, instinctive, and uncontained. It is a space beyond rules and refinement—where emotion, intuition, and raw experience lead. WILD can appear as nature, inner landscapes, memory, rebellion, or transformation. It invites artists to explore freedom, intensity, and the beauty found in disorder, risk, and vulnerability.

WILD may be interpreted literally or abstractly. It can emerge through nature, inner landscapes, personal narratives, fragmented forms, bold gestures, experimental language, or moments of rupture and transformation. Whether physical or psychological, external or internal, WILD reflects forces that resist containment and invite risk, intensity, and freedom.

WiVLA members are encouraged to create work that responds to WILD through expressive imagery, innovative materials, unconventional structures, or powerful storytelling. All interpretations are welcome.

Collaboration registrations are now full.

Marsha Glickman
As a former clinician and IT consultant, structure and methodical detail show in Marsha’s passion for deconstructing and reconfiguring found paper, paintings, book parts and other ephemera into meaningful works of art. She incorporates right and left-brain messages with the effusive use of color to provoke the viewer to see his or her personal story in the work.

“I am compelled to create; it's a calling that does not stop.

I was fortunate to obtain studio space in 2012 while working in corporate and have been creating "on the side" ever since; even taking projects to work on while travelling for my day job.

As a self-taught artist using only original found materials/ephemera, there is great pleasure in giving the disparate and discarded ephemera an opportunity for a new life; a new purpose and meaning when combined into a single construction. The complexity and hidden messages in these creations reference concepts and historical instances influenced by life experiences: living and travelling internationally, family upbringing, thoughts on world events and scientific education.”

Submissions
Synkroniciti is Open
for Written and Visual Art Submissions
Announcing Synkroniciti's new theme, “Dignity,” open May 1 -  July 15, 2026.

Synkroniciti invites literary, visual, and performing artists to explore the concept of dignity.

Dignity connotes a way of being full of seriousness, self‑control, and integrity—a steadiness signaling capability and self‑respect. Yet this version of dignity can also create distance, obscuring vulnerability and limiting connection.

At its most essential, dignity is far less performative: it is the quality of being worthy of honor and respect. But how do we decide who is worthy? What happens when dignity becomes entangled with status, manners, or proximity to power rather than with intrinsic human value?

We are interested in work that probes the inner landscapes of memory and imagination and the dynamics of community and individuality to reveal how we perceive dignity: how it manifests, how it falters, and how it shifts. We are especially drawn to the places where dignity diverges from power and privilege, and to the moments when dignity is withheld, restored, or reclaimed.

For this issue, we invite you to consider dignity not as a fixed ideal but as a living, evolving relationship between self and community. How do we recognize and prioritize dignity in society and how do we safeguard the dignity residing in ourselves?
