THE POWER OF COLLABORATION

I am drawn to the word “Collaboration.” Not only because WiVLA has its biennial collaboration in full swing, but also to what WiVLA’s mission statement imparts to us: WiVLA's mission is to provide an inspiring forum for women to explore and advance their creative development, to promote their work in the marketplace, and to infuse the community with their spirit of cooperation and invention.

When Karleen Koen, Janean Thompson and Martha Skow founded WiVLA in 1994, a collaboration between writers and artists began - one that continues today. I see this spirit of collaboration especially evident in our WiVLA Board of Directors. Women who have ideas, plans, dreams and schemes that nurture and encourage collaboration not only among themselves, but to give our members opportunities to collaborate.

Collaboration, simply put is “to work jointly with others in some endeavor.” I’ve witnessed this many times over the last few months. The creation of a WiVLA anthology “Resilience” was a collaboration that resulted in eighteen of our Literary members being given the opportunity to have their writings juried into a published anthology titled “The Fire Within.” Visual artists were invited into the collaboration by holding a book cover competition. Judges and editors across our membership were asked to join in. The final result was a public reading by the
writers via Zoom. This collaborative invention was nurtured by a “spirit of cooperation” that is rare. Because of the success of this anthology, it will be a lasting part of our WiVLA annual calendar.

The WiVLA Wall at Smithers Park, located in Houston’s 3rd Ward, adjacent to the Orange Show, is another example: a large, colorful, mosaic created from pieces of the former installation. Many WiVLA members participated in this lengthy and involved project sustained by the power of collaboration through to completion.

Looking ahead, I can without reservation, say that each event is either created collaboratively, or designed to foster collaboration. Our current biennial collaboration “WILD” is now accepting submissions. Visual and Literary partners will blend their creative works around this theme. I’m excited to see just how “wild” our artists will be.

As of this writing there is still time to find a partner and begin a collaboration. The prospectus is included in this newsletter and on our WiVLA calendar under “Events.”

Our guest speaker at our March Member Meeting was Sarah Fisher. She entitled her presentation “Speak Up However You Can.” Sarah is a protest artist who uses her creative skills, painting, collage, printmaking, installation, poetry, sculpture, film and playwriting as her vehicles to speak out on issues. She is courageous, driven and compelled to do what life has called her to do. I’m not saying we should all be like her. But we can use her as an example of what is possible. We can change the world one painting, one poem, one mosaic wall at a time.
Possibly, if we don’t yet have collaborators, we can begin with ourselves… creating work with intention and to what speaks to us personally. If it is meaningful to us, it will be meaningful to others. And in today’s world, as has been true throughout history, creative works and collaboration are vital to our survival as individuals and as a community.

Respectfully submitted,
Susan Salter

WiVLA is sponsoring an anthology competition for WiVLA members and Texas writers who identify as women. The theme of our 2026 competition is POWER.

POWER is the force that rises not only in command but in courage. The spark that moves through our words and bodies, and lives in our belonging. It is the quiet knowledge of one’s worth, the trembling moment before a choice is made that changes everything. Power can uplift a single voice or surge through many—Power is a human inheritance. It is a rebellion, a remembering. Power lives in the body’s stride, in the mind’s clarity, in the collective’s roar. In these works, power is not merely held or taken; it is awakened, conjured, shared, misused, reclaimed—in an ever-shifting current that shapes who we are and who we dare to become.

Submissions open May 15th. See here for full details and the prospectus.

Our Power of Belonging membership campaign has been a thrill! Welcome to all of our new members - we can't wait to create wonderful things together.

Thanks for helping us grow our inspiring community :-)

2026 Collaboration

Theme:  Wild

This theme, WILD, speaks to what is untamed, instinctive, and uncontained. It is a space beyond rules and refinement—where emotion, intuition, and raw experience lead. WILD can appear as nature, inner landscapes, memory, rebellion, or transformation. It invites artists to explore freedom, intensity, and the beauty found in disorder, risk, and vulnerability.

WILD may be interpreted literally or abstractly. It can emerge through nature, inner landscapes, personal narratives, fragmented forms, bold gestures, experimental language, or moments of rupture and transformation. Whether physical or psychological, external or internal, WILD reflects forces that resist containment and invite risk, intensity, and freedom.

WiVLA members are encouraged to create work that responds to WILD through expressive imagery, innovative materials, unconventional structures, or powerful storytelling. All interpretations are welcome.

Editing Yourself: Pruning to establish and maintain tone
$70.00 USD/ $55 USD for Synkroniciti Subscribers and Synkroniciti Contest Winners
Do you need to shorten a piece to fit submission requirements? Do you find yourself fighting to establish the tone you desire for your piece or wish you could do it more quickly? From past perfect tense to language that diminishes your experience, we’ll discuss some of the things that can stand in your way and then go on a hunt for these stumbling blocks. Bring your flash or excerpts from non-fiction and fiction works. Geared towards prose writers.

Wednesday 4/8  5:30-7:30pm or Saturday, 4/11  10am-Noon via Zoom
Poetry Playdate: The Use of Enjambment and Spacing
$70.00 USD/ $55 USD for Synkroniciti Subscribers and Synkroniciti Contest Winners
In this playdate we will experiment with the effect of enjambment and spacing in poetry. Bring in a few poems in progress. Katherine will give you some tools and examples and then you will apply those tools to your work. It's a playful process and can help you unlock depths of meaning and shape the way readers experience your poem. We will discuss line, stanza, and internal breaks, indentation, tempo (the regulation of the reader's speed), establishing mood, creating ambiguity, replacing punctuation, and placing emphasis. Geared towards any poet writing delineated poetry (as opposed to prose poetry), from emerging to experienced.

Wednesday 4/15  5:30-7:30pm or Saturday, 4/18  10am-Noon via Zoom
Creative Playdate: Building an inspiration board
$70.00 USD/ $55 USD for Synkroniciti Subscribers and Synkroniciti Contest Winners
The goal of this class is to allow our subconscious to help us put together a collage of images, with or without text, which we can then use to write poetry or stories. We will begin writing during the second hour of the class. You will need a piece of cardboard or posterboard sturdy enough to use as a base--11 x 14 is a nice target size but it can be any size or shape that pleases you--also glue; scissors; and a stack of old magazines, junk mail or paper to tear or cut. Geared toward writers and creatives of all kinds looking for inspiration.

Wednesday 4/29 5:30-7:30pm or Saturday 5/2 10am-Noon via Zoom
Reading Aloud: The Page as a map
$70.00 USD/ $55 USD for Synkroniciti Subscribers and Synkroniciti Contest Winners
This class explores clues on the page and how to use them to shape your reading. This includes alliteration, enjambment and spacing. Not only will you build awareness of how to read these clues, you’ll also become aware of how to use them better as a writer to guide your readers. Some examples will be provided and you can also bring your own, either original or favorites. Any items you bring to read should also be available as a screen share. Geared toward poets, poetic flash writers, and people who love to read poetry out loud.

Would you like a private coaching/editing session? These can be held via Zoom, over e-mail, or in person if you are in the Houston area. Sessions are $90 an hour. There is a $15 discount for current subscribers and any artist (visual, literary or performing) who has won a Synkroniciti contest. Katherine is happy to help with all literary forms and also helps visual and performing artists with artist statements. She can also help you organize a book or put together a reading. After sign-up, you will be contacted via email to set up your plan.

Registration for these services is via the Synkroniciti website at https://synkroniciti.com/whats-going-on/.

April Member Meeting

April Member Meeting: ECO Fund Updates and Drawing

At this annual Member Meeting, the previous year's ECO Fund grantees check-in and provide updates!

Each year since 1999, WiVLA has awarded two $1,000 Educational and Cultural Opportunity Grants (ECO Grants), one each for a writer and an artist. This means that as of 2025, WiVLA has given $54,000 to 54 members to provide support for specific projects that enhanced or will enhance the recipients' creative development. The award is selected by blind drawing from the qualified applicants at the April meeting each year.

We are very proud of the ECO Grant process and the support it has provided to so many members to pursue an artistic project or goal. An internal committee that includes Board Members and past ECO grant winners screen all entries to ensure that applications are complete and consistent with the award's intent. Applications that fail this screening will not be included in the drawing.

To be eligible, you must have been a member for the last two consecutive years. The ECO application is available here.

Previous winners have used the award to attend classes and workshops, purchase equipment, improve their workspace, install community art, research books, travel to research sites and museums, hire an editor, attend retreats and conferences, and more. The grants have made a significant difference in the winners' artistic lives. Please don’t miss the chance to participate in the ECO Grant awards.

The April meeting will be held Tuesday, April 21st at 6 pm.

Check out the WiVLA Calendar for details and updates.

Submissions
Synkroniciti is Open
for Written and Visual Art Submissions
Synkroniciti is a quarterly online arts journal accepting work in a variety of media across the visual, literary and performing arts spectrum.
Announcing Synkroniciti's new theme, “Expectations,” open through April 15, 2026.
What do we owe to ourselves, to others, to the world? What do we expect in return? The expectations we have for our lives, environment, and society shape our attitudes and actions, creating beacons of light on one hand and prisons of thought and circumstance on the other. They can provide a spark for transformation or a quiet tether to the familiar. What we expect determines how we interpret what happens to us.
Family pressures, societal roles and generational burdens conflict with personal needs and goals. The illusion of control is shattered, leaving our plans unachievable. We navigate emotional landscapes of waiting and uncertainty, shepherded by internal and external voices telling us what we “should” be doing or feeling. Sometimes we exceed expectations, sometimes we fail, and sometimes we render them irrelevant.
Synkroniciti is looking for work that explores the weight, hope, joy, disappointment, or subversion of expectations, illuminating the gap between what we imagine and what unfolds, between the constructs of our minds and reality.
