EC(h)O

WiVLA is gearing up for our annual ECO (Educational and Cultural Opportunity) Grant. Each year since 1999, WiVLA has awarded two $1,000 grants—one to a writer and one to an artist. As of 2025, that means we have given $54,000 to 54 members in support of specific projects that have enhanced—or will enhance—their creative development.

Previous recipients have used their awards to attend classes and workshops, purchase equipment, improve their workspaces, install community art, buy research materials, travel to research sites and museums, hire editors, and attend retreats and conferences. These grants have made a meaningful difference in our members’ artistic lives.

Readers of my President’s messages know by now that I have a great affinity for words. I love looking up definitions, exploring synonyms and antonyms, and collecting relevant quotes. It’s a bit of an obsession. So, as I’ve been ruminating on the upcoming ECO grant, the word echo keeps filling me with possibilities.

An echo symbolizes how artistic expression reverberates beyond the moment of creation—how one image, one word, one gesture continues to live in others. What we send into the world comes back to us. An echo reminds us that our words and images have power and reach. I believe the original creators of the ECO grant had this in mind. It is certainly evident in our mission statement:

WiVLA’s mission is to provide an inspiring forum for women to explore and advance their creative development, to promote their work in the marketplace, and to infuse the community with their spirit of cooperation and invention.

C.S. Lewis wrote:
“For they [for us, WiVLA, this means our creative works] are not the thing itself; they are only the scent of a flower we have not found, the echo of a tune we have not heard, news from a country we have never yet visited.”

I never thought I would quote Taylor Swift, but this rings true for me:
“When you're singing you can hear the echo of people in the audience singing every single word with you, and that was that big dream that I had for myself. It's happening.”

Isn’t that what we want as artists? To hear the echo of those who experience our art—singing along with us?

And, as spoken by Russell Crowe’s character in Gladiator: “What we do in life echoes in eternity.”

May the ECO grant continue to create echoes—within our members, within our community, and far beyond.

Now is the time to sign-up for the ECO Grant. There is a link in this newsletter and on our website, Wivla.org, under Why Wivla.  Deadline is April 11.

Respectfully submitted

2026 Collaboration

Theme:  Wild

This theme, WILD, speaks to what is untamed, instinctive, and uncontained. It is a space beyond rules and refinement—where emotion, intuition, and raw experience lead. WILD can appear as nature, inner landscapes, memory, rebellion, or transformation. It invites artists to explore freedom, intensity, and the beauty found in disorder, risk, and vulnerability.

WILD may be interpreted literally or abstractly. It can emerge through nature, inner landscapes, personal narratives, fragmented forms, bold gestures, experimental language, or moments of rupture and transformation. Whether physical or psychological, external or internal, WILD reflects forces that resist containment and invite risk, intensity, and freedom.

WiVLA members are encouraged to create work that responds to WILD through expressive imagery, innovative materials, unconventional structures, or powerful storytelling. All interpretations are welcome.

We'll provide a virtual Meet & Match event on March 17, after the member meeting, for any member who wants to participate and has not yet found a partner.

Register your Collaboration as soon as you find your partner!

Editing Yourself: Catching common mistakes in prose writing
$70.00 USD/ $55 USD for Synkroniciti Subscribers and Synkroniciti Contest Winners

Saturday 3/7 10am-Noon via Zoom or Tuesday 3/10 6:30-8:30pm via Zoom
Poetry as a therapeutic practice
$70.00 USD/ $55 USD for Synkroniciti Subscribers and Synkroniciti Contest Winners
We will use image prompts to slow down and quiet our mind so that we write from a place of openness and awareness. By using intuition and free association, we invite the subconscious to take a larger part in our writing. Geared towards poets, from established to aspiring.

Wednesday 3/25 5:30-7:30pm or Saturday 3/28 10am-Noon via Zoom
Reading Aloud: Focus on breathing, projection and slowing down
$70.00 USD/ $55 USD for Synkroniciti Subscribers and Synkroniciti Contest Winners
Do you feel rushed or breathless in readings or wish you had the stage presence and punch to catch the audience’s attention? This class is based on the mechanics of breathing and projection and aims to help us slow down and build confidence in our voice as an instrument for promoting our work. If you are a poet or flash writer, bring your work to practice reading. You can also bring a favorite poem or flash by another artist to read. Visual artists are welcome to bring artist statements as their practice pieces. Work should be between 2 and 5 minutes long. Geared towards anyone who would like to read better out loud, be they artist, writer, performer or enthusiast.

Would you like a private coaching/editing session? These can be held via Zoom, over e-mail, or in person if you are in the Houston area. Sessions are $90 an hour. There is a $15 discount for current subscribers and any artist (visual, literary or performing) who has won a Synkroniciti contest. Katherine is happy to help with all literary forms and also helps visual and performing artists with artist statements. She can also help you organize a book or put together a reading. After sign-up, you will be contacted via email to set up your plan.

Registration for these services is via the Synkroniciti website at https://synkroniciti.com/whats-going-on/.

Lawna Gamble
Lawna “Lcee” Gamble is a Houston-based abstract expressionist whose work centers on emotional truth, intuition, and the transformative power of creative expression. Grounded in a background in art therapy and arts education, Gamble approaches painting as both a personal inquiry and a relational act—one that honors lived experience, inner landscapes, and the complexity of being human.

Her abstract works emerge through a layered, intuitive process guided by color, gesture, and texture. Rather than aiming for resolution or clarity, Gamble invites ambiguity, believing that abstraction is a language meant to be felt rather than deciphered. Themes of duality—strength and vulnerability, chaos and calm, grief and joy—surface organically, offering viewers a space for reflection and emotional resonance.

Gamble’s experience as an art therapist deeply informs her practice and philosophy. She views the act of making art as inherently radical: a reclaiming of voice, agency, and embodied knowing. This belief extends into her work as an educator and community builder, where she champions accessibility, creative courage, and the dismantling of perfectionism—particularly for women and young people navigating self-expression.

Through her studio practice, teaching, and community-based projects, Gamble seeks to create spaces where art functions as connection, witness, and care. Her work reflects a commitment to authenticity, process, and the enduring belief that creative expression is not a luxury, but a vital human need.
Let It Go Already (acrylic, fabric, and paper on canvas) and Beauty Wins (acrylic, watercolor, and ink on canvas)
Lawna adds, "Lately, I've begun incorporating textiles and fabric into my abstract work. I'm still very much in the experimental phase - listening, testing, and allowing the materials to guide the process. This shift has been fueled by a growing preoccupation with the immense waste we generate globally, and a desire to create work that speaks to genuine sustainability rather than surface-level solutions. I'm exploring how discarded or repurposed materials might hold story, memory, and possibility, and how abstraction can give those materials a new voice."

Submissions
Synkroniciti is Open
for Written and Visual Art Submissions
Synkroniciti is a quarterly online arts journal accepting work in a variety of media across the visual, literary and performing arts spectrum.
Announcing Synkroniciti's new theme, “Expectations,” open through April 15, 2026.
What do we owe to ourselves, to others, to the world? What do we expect in return? The expectations we have for our lives, environment, and society shape our attitudes and actions, creating beacons of light on one hand and prisons of thought and circumstance on the other. They can provide a spark for transformation or a quiet tether to the familiar. What we expect determines how we interpret what happens to us.
Family pressures, societal roles and generational burdens conflict with personal needs and goals. The illusion of control is shattered, leaving our plans unachievable. We navigate emotional landscapes of waiting and uncertainty, shepherded by internal and external voices telling us what we “should” be doing or feeling. Sometimes we exceed expectations, sometimes we fail, and sometimes we render them irrelevant.
Synkroniciti is looking for work that explores the weight, hope, joy, disappointment, or subversion of expectations, illuminating the gap between what we imagine and what unfolds, between the constructs of our minds and reality.
