The Effort and Recovery Cycle

When it comes to my visions for business endeavors and my art and writing practices, there seems to be a rhythm of putting in effort and in rest and recovery. When I started working full-time in October, I refined my art and writing practices to ones that served my spiritual and emotional balance. I stopped trying to produce work for the writing group I’d been in for 4 ½ years. I stopped buying canvas to paint on. I kept up with my blackout poetry practice and made that my only art and creative writing practice because it brings me ease, peace, and perspective.

Around 4 months into my new job, seeds that I had planted years ago started sprouting. Communication training inquiries and coaching clients started popping up from relationships and conversations that happened years prior.

In April, to celebrate poetry month, I created the art for more of my blackout poems and posted daily for 21 days. During that time a friend referred someone to me and my artwork for an office space consignment opportunity that turned into two large commissions.

I have been reflecting on the effort and recovery cycle of large birds whose flapping wings give them lift and whose rest cycle allows them to soar. May we all find a rhythm that allows each of us to give our creative endeavors lift and enough rest to see from a different perspective and enjoy the view in periods of ease and flow.

Sun Jun 8 2025, 1pm - 4pm Writespace @ Sabine Street Studios

Creating stories is like creating dreams and an incredibly intuitive process.

So as writers, the more we can train ourselves to build that intuitive muscle, the more it will help when we’re diving into our characters’ psyches, figuring out plot, and culling our imaginations to answer that age-old question: what happens next?

This workshop will explore intuition in our writing and offer hands-on tips to tap into one's subconscious and empower our muse.

Please bring a pen or pencil and paper or a writing journal.

Joan Son and the Origami Experience

Joan, an original member of WiVLA in 1994, will talk about her life as an artist working in paper, based on the discipline of origami.

She'll start in 1963 and move quickly through early experiences and on towards miracles.

Joan Son has been exploring the art of paper folding since her debut in the windows of Tiffany & Co. in the spring of 1993.

Her gift work has been carried by numerous museum shops, including the National Gallery of Art and the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., and The Menil Collection in Houston, Texas.

Her art, ranging from small pieces to major, commissioned installations, is in private and public collections throughout the United States.

Joan has been a member of Origami USA since 1993 and has studied with many paper-folding masters worldwide.
Her current work explores the geometry of the crease lines inside the folds. She deconstructs and reconstructs her paintings and photographic images for a closer look and a luminous effect.

See more of Joan’s art on her website here or email her at info@joanson.com

Denise Bossarte

Many of you may know me as a photographer, but I am also a writer!

I've been an avid reader since I was gifted my first cloth book in preschool.  As soon as I learned that I could write my OWN stories, I began penning poems, essays, short stories, and eventually books.
I grew up in Springfield, Missouri, in the middle of the Ozarks. I spent lots of time playing on our 13 acres in the pastures with the horses or down by the creek, making up stories. I was always the kid with the longest book reports and the most books read each school year.

My passion for learning how things work led me to years of school and a career in science and technology, with degrees in Chemistry, Developmental Biology, and Computer science. But I always had the desire to put down on paper all the imaginings in my head.

After moving to Texas in 2012, I began helping a friend review and edit his science fiction novel, and that inspired me to start writing my own work for publication.

I have self-published all my award-winning books. My first book, Dreams of the Turtle King, was a collection of beach poems written initially while walking the Florida beaches near our home in Deerfield Beach. I've written several collections of poetry since then, including one that features the Haiku poems I mailed to my mother on postcards for a month to celebrate her 80th birthday.

I also have a dark urban fantasy novel, Glamorous, and three associated short stories. Another paranormal short story, "My Girl Sarah," was included in the Journey into Art short story collection, a collaboration with the Houston Writers Guild.

My greatest achievement was my self-help book, Thriving, which I wrote to share my healing journey from childhood abuse. I wrote Thriving because it was the book I wished I had when I started my healing journey. It provides all the practices that helped me move beyond the trauma, including the poetry journal I kept during my healing work. It won 15 book awards and was recognized by Kirkus Review and Publisher's Weekly.

I look forward to each new writing challenge, whether it's a theme, a prompt-based excursion, or something inspired by my life experiences.

Check out all of Denise's books here.

Redemption Stories

Theme: Redemption Stories

In July we’re thinking about radical forgiveness. For ourselves and for others. How have you found redemption in this world? Come back from the edge after nearly losing it all? How have you made up with someone you thought you could never forgive? Or maybe you are still seeking redemption. Maybe you can’t let the person who hurt you back into your life. Maybe your redemption has actually come in the form of letting go.

WOW! is a global magazine, designed to support women's creativity, energy, blood, sweat and tears, throughout all stages of the writing process. We envision Wow! being a favorite watering hole for professionals, the up-and-coming, and the recipients of our labors--the avid readers.

Our concept is unique, as it fills in the missing gap between writing websites and women's magazines. We are dedicated to raising the overall standards within the writing community, and devote an active profile within writing industry associations, organizations and websites.
