DIVERSE WORKS

Take a look at these two works of art. Could they possibly have been created by the same artist? Surprise! They're both mine!

Yes, both are abstract. Yes, both use encaustic paints. But that's pretty much where the similarities end.

The first is an encaustic monoprint, created on a heated surface called a HotBox and printed on paper. It's loose, spontaneous, and took about 15 minutes to create.

The second is a sculpture constructed from various fabrics and covered with layer upon layer of encaustic wax. It weighs around 12 pounds and took six months to complete!

Fifteen minutes versus six months. Paper versus sculpture. Spontaneity versus painstaking construction. And I loved creating both!

Sometimes I drive myself absolutely crazy with all the different ideas bouncing around in my head. Just when I think I've settled into one direction, another idea comes along and whispers, "Hey, what about this?"

But I've come to realize that my insatiable curiosity does not distract from my creativity. It's what fuels it! I love exploring new ideas, experimenting with different materials, and discovering where the creative process might take me. And guess what? I'm never bored with my art. Well, almost never. Attaching 200 individual suckers to the tentacles of an octopus sculpture did test my patience just a bit!

But that's the beauty of it. Diversity keeps me curious, challenges me to try something new, and reminds me that creativity doesn't have to follow a straight line. In fact, I think it's much more interesting when it doesn't.

Diversity works for me!

And that brings me to WiVLA.

If ever there were an organization that personifies diversity, it's WiVLA. Think about it. Writers and visual artists, working in entirely different creative languages, coming together with a shared passion for expression, exploration, and connection.

Our members represent an extraordinary variety of ages, backgrounds, ethnicities, experiences, artistic styles, and literary genres. Some of us paint, some sculpt, some write poetry, novels, essays, or plays. Some of us do a little of everything! We don't all think alike, create alike, or even agree on what makes something beautiful or meaningful. And isn't that wonderful?

Malcolm Forbes once said, "Diversity: the art of thinking independently together."

I can't think of a better description of WiVLA!

We don't just talk about diversity. We create opportunities for it to flourish. Through our collaborations, exhibitions, literary anthologies, readings, and monthly member meetings, WiVLA brings together women whose creative journeys may be vastly different but whose desire to create and connect is much the same.

And here's what I find particularly exciting. When we encounter someone whose work, experiences, or perspectives are different from our own, something wonderful can happen. We question our assumptions. We discover new ways of thinking and creating. Sometimes those encounters lead to friendships, collaborations, or even an entirely new direction in our own work.

As M. Scott Peck said, "Share our similarities, celebrate our differences."

That's what WiVLA does so beautifully. We celebrate what brings us together without losing sight of what makes each of us unique. Our differences don't divide us. They enrich us, challenge us, and expand our understanding of art, literature, one another, and ourselves.

You'll find many opportunities to experience this wonderful diversity throughout this newsletter. I encourage you to take advantage of them. Enter work into an exhibition or literary contest, listen to a reading, attend a monthly member meeting. Find opportunities to meet in-person and strike up a conversation with someone whose creative world is completely different from yours. You never know where that might lead.

And if you're one of those people who has a dozen different creative ideas circling around in your brain, take heart! Maybe you don't need to choose just one. Perhaps your curiosity is leading you toward something you haven't even imagined yet. I've decided that diversity isn't something I need to tame. It's something I need to embrace and celebrate.

Diversity works for me. Diversity works for WiVLA. And I hope diversity works for you, too!

The Astral Library: A Novel

by Kate Quinn

From New York Times bestselling author Kate Quinn comes a gorgeously written fantastical adventure which poses the question: Have you ever wished you could live inside a book? Welcome to the Astral Library, where books are not just objects, but doors to new worlds, new lives, and new futures.

Alexandria “Alix” Watson has learned one lesson from her barren childhood in the foster-care system: unlike people, books will never let you down. Working three dead-end jobs to make ends meet and knowing college is a pipe dream, Alix takes nightly refuge in the high-vaulted reading room at the Boston Public Library, escaping into her favorite fantasy novels and dreaming of far-off lands. Until the day she stumbles through a hidden door and meets the Librarian: the ageless, acerbic guardian of a hidden library where the desperate and the lost escape to new lives...inside their favorite books.

The Librarian takes a dazzled Alix under her wing, but before she can escape into the pages of her new life, a shadowy enemy emerges to threaten everyone the Astral Library has ever helped protect. Aided by a dashing costume-shop owner, Alix and the Librarian flee through the Regency drawing rooms of Jane Austen to the back alleys of Sherlock Holmes and the champagne-soaked parties of The Great Gatsby as danger draws inexorably closer. But who does their enemy really wish to destroy—Alix, the Librarian, or the Library itself?

The Language of Color, The Music of Line
$70.00 USD/ $55 USD for Synkroniciti Subscribers and Synkroniciti Contest Winners

The Language of Color, The Music of Line
Color sings. Line speaks. Artists have transformed shape, rhythm, symbol, and pattern into forms of expression that move beyond words.

In this workshop, we'll explore how visionary artists developed visual languages and musical forms through painting. Through the work of  Wassily Kandinsky, M.K. Čiurlionis, Hilma af Klint, Arthur Dove, Robert Delaunay, Fernand Léger, and Paul Klee, we'll examine how color, line, shape, rhythm, and symbol create meaning through visual relationships, structures, and forms inspired by music.

Together we'll view and discuss selected artworks, explore the relationships between image, sound, pattern, and meaning, and respond through generative ekphrastic writing prompts.
Writers of poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, and hybrid forms are welcome. No previous art or writing experience is required.

November Member Meeting - Literary Readings: Power

What does Power mean to you?

The force that rises not only in command but in courage.

The spark that moves through our words, bodies, and lives in our belonging.

It is the quiet knowledge of one’s worth, the trembling moment before a choice is made that changes everything.

Power can uplift a single voice or surge through many—Power is a human inheritance.

It is a rebellion, a remembering. Power lives in the body’s stride, in the mind’s clarity, in the collective’s roar.

In these works, power is not merely held or taken; it is awakened, conjured, shared, misused, reclaimed—in an ever-shifting current that shapes who we are and who we dare to become.

The Call Me Mother Experience with Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton

In October, Deborah D.E.E.P. Mouton shared her current work on the Call Me Mother Experience with WiVLA.

The Call Me Mother Experience (CMME) is a multi-site exhibit and awareness campaign that's dedicated to using art as a community tool of reflections, reframing and refocusing the stories of the Black Maternal Health crisis.

The Call Me Mother Experience (CMM) is an interactive, immersive installation and experience that combines digital storytelling, text-based art, spoken word, film, and live performance, as a platform to examine Black folks and the profound ways they and their communities navigate the birthing journey.

With death rates 3-4 times higher than the national average, Black womxn suffer higher complications due to systematic racism and implicit biases across the healthcare field. In Harris County, TX, these staggering rates contribute to mothers and their newborn children's deaths. These incidents, labeled "deaths of disparity" by the Health and Resource Service Administration, have been deemed completely preventable.  This art raises the question, "Who is deserving of life and legacy in the eyes of our healthcare system?"

We offer community dialogues and programming, collaborative art pop ups and a culminating art exhibit that celebrates our collective voices in the fight for maternal equity.

Visit the Call Me Mother Experience website here!

Amanda T. Silva

Amanda T. Silva is a multidisciplinary artist and progressive political strategist. At her core, she is an organizer born and raised by a strong Sri Lankan community in New York. As a passionate advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion, she believes in opening doors for others and centering those most impacted in order to achieve collective liberation.

As an artist, she uses painting, mixed media collage, sculpture, and performance to tell a story of self, ancestry, protection, and triumph. Her work is rooted in spectacle, perception, and the exchange of shared experience between the artist and the observer. You can find her at Sabine Street Studios #123. Her studio space is open to artists for daily rentals through her business, Collective Liberation Studio.

Amanda’s career spans different sectors. Beginning in international development, she lived in Sri Lanka, Australia, and served as part of the first 20 placements in West Java in Peace Corps Indonesia. You can find an oral history of her Peace Corps service preserved in the National Archives as part of the JFK Presidential Library.

She called Washington, DC home for 17 years. After the 2016 presidential election, Amanda shifted from international relations into progressive politics. In 2017, she helped national movements with organizing and march logistics. She is a trained facilitator for DEI, de-escalation, and bystander intervention training.

Her professional background in digital strategy took her from Planned Parenthood Federation of America to Biden for President, Harris for President, and she served as a senior staff member in the Democratic National Committee. She helped launch Joe Biden’s 2024 presidential re-election campaign from her labor bed before giving birth to her first-born, which in many ways informed her path back into the arts. Her family moved to Houston in 2025, and she is grateful to have found community here.

Virginia M. Mohlere is happy to report that her debut novella, A House of Perfect Safety, was released this month by Dancing Star Press!

Press link: https://dancingstarpress.com/product/a-house-of-perfect-safety/

Book description:  A House of Perfect Safety is by author Virginia M. Mohlere.
A fae novella of care-taking and justice seeking, with a magical house, a binding Pact, and a sincere love of trees.

Synopsis:

For centuries of seasons, Warden has served the Pact at Ash House. For any creature of the Twilight Lands who shows up on the doorstep of her House with a need, she stitches wounds, cures poisons, provides safety and rest, assuming the form demanded of her by each of her varied visitors. When a guest arrives whose mind is so locked away that she does not know what form to take, what injuries he has suffered, nor how to help him, it will stretch her skills — and the Pact — to the limit.

Should the Pact be broken, it could be the end of the Twilight itself.

Gwynne Ross has won first place from Art Doll Magazine and the International Art Dolls Registry (IADR) for her  art doll, "Cynthia."

Inspired by Cynthia Erivo's stunning appearance in a divine white gown at the Academy Awards, the sculpture is  crafted from papier-mâché, paper clay, polymer clay, and wood.  A  highlight of the piece is its cascade of handcrafted flowers made entirely from painted coffee filters.

"Cynthia" is also proudly featured on the cover of the current issue of Art Doll Magazine, an international online publication.

Synkroniciti is Open
for Written and Visual Art Submissions
The sacred and the profane are often treated as opposites: the divine and the mundane, the holy and the corrupted, the elevated and the earthly. Yet they frequently occupy the same space. Moments of transcendence emerge from ordinary lives. Rituals arise from daily habits. Beauty and degradation, reverence and desire, devotion and doubt exist side by side and intertwined with one another.

Synkroniciti invites literary, visual, and performing artists to explore the tensions and intersections between the sacred and the profane. We welcome both literal and metaphorical interpretations of the theme.

We are interested in work that embraces complexity and searches for meaning in unexpected places, valuing questions as much as answers.
