Article header: (text on image) President's Message

I was recently in Scotland for vacation, and while I was there, two very important women died. Dolly Parton, born in 1946, passed away on August 25, 2026, at the age of 80. Gloria Steinem, born in 1934, passed away on September 2, 2026, at the age of 92. Their deaths were only eight days apart.

It was strange to be in another country and experience the deaths of these two brilliant and capable women from so far away. I reached out to some friends back in the States, and one of them said that she was worried that all of the feminists were fading away. She hoped the pendulum would not swing back too far.

These two women, on the surface, could not have been less alike: Dolly, the country superstar who came from humble beginnings and Gloria, the aviator-glassed journalist who became one of the most recognizable faces of the women’s movement.

But when we look at these two women side by side, we begin to see their similarities.

Dolly Parton’s life was a testament to the power of dreaming beyond your circumstances, staying true to who you are, and using your gifts not only to rise, but to lift others along the way.

Gloria Steinem was a defining leader of the women’s movement who helped change the world as we know it and taught generations of women the value of their own voices.

Dolly never proclaimed herself a feminist, but Gloria Steinem once wrote of her, “If feminism means each of us finding our unique power, and helping other women do the same, Dolly Parton certainly has done both.”

While in Scotland, we were on our way to check out yet another castle when I heard a loud and compelling sound. Naturally, I had to follow it.

We came across a parade, complete with bagpipes and drums, men and women in the tartans and kilts of their clans, and hundreds of St. Andrew’s flags, along with the Lion Rampant of Scotland. I asked a couple of women watching the parade what it was about and was told that it was a march for Scottish independence.

After being in Scotland for two weeks and learning about the country’s centuries-old struggles over sovereignty, union, and national identity, I found the experience very moving. Whatever one’s political views, the people marching that day were clearly dedicated to their cause.

The ancient Scottish motto, Nemo me impune lacessit, is commonly translated as “No one harms me with impunity.” To me, those words evoke a spirit of resilience and defiance—a determination to stand firm in what one believes and to protect what one values.

I do not want this President’s Message to be about feminism. Each of us has our own story about how the women’s movement has affected our lives and how we have responded to it. Nor do I want this to be considered a political statement.

I merely want to use these two remarkable women—and my experience in Scotland—as examples of how we might choose to live in this world. Perhaps there is something for us in all three.

I never tire of hearing our WiVLA mission statement:

WiVLA's mission is to provide an inspiring forum for women to explore and advance their creative development, to promote their work in the marketplace, and to infuse the community with their spirit of cooperation and invention.

Women in the Visual and Literary Arts (WiVLA) is a nurturing place for sharing and growth, where visual artists, writers, and other creatives meet in an atmosphere of support and mutual respect.

As women, and as members of this amazing organization, we give ourselves—and each other—the freedom to be true to ourselves as creatives. We nurture and encourage women to find their own voices.

And perhaps that is where Dolly, Gloria, Scotland, and WiVLA come together for me: Know who you are. Find your voice. Use your gifts. Lift others. And have the courage to stand for what you value.

Respectfully submitted,

Susan Salter

WiVLA Board President, 2026

What does Power mean to you?

The force that rises not only in command but in courage.

The spark that moves through our words, bodies, and lives in our belonging.

It is the quiet knowledge of one’s worth, the trembling moment before a choice is made that changes everything.

Power can uplift a single voice or surge through many—Power is a human inheritance.

It is a rebellion, a remembering. Power lives in the body’s stride, in the mind’s clarity, in the collective’s roar.

In these works, power is not merely held or taken; it is awakened, conjured, shared, misused, reclaimed—in an ever-shifting current that shapes who we are and who we dare to become.

Upcoming Class with Gail Plunkett

Gail Plunkett has been invited by the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Art to teach a class on creativity. The class slogan is "Creativity is all in your head. Get out of your head."

It means look within for your creativity, originality, and imagination; in other words, for your own personal Muse. But once you find her,
when the inner barriers and difficulties and false beliefs start getting in your way, then you have to get out of your head, or your Muse will withdraw back to your depths!

Together, we'll create an environment where we can freely talk and think about ways to summon our Muse and to go over, around, under or through our barriers. We'll experience and practice those ways through experimental art making. (Warning: It could get messy!) The goal is to forget what we know and don’t know, and learn to simply follow where our Muse leads. The hope is to witness more and more the hand of her presence in our work, not only while experimenting, but also all the way through to the last moments before declaring a piece finished.

Class Title: The Wrong Way

Two Class Offerings, both on Tuesdays:
Oct. 6, 13, 20, & 27; 1:00pm - 3:00pm and
Nov. 10, 17, 24, & Dec. 1; 6:00pm - 8:00pm

Location: Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Art; 6815 Cypresswood Dr., Spring, TX; 77379; 281-376-6322

East meets West - Artist and Muralist Asiya Nuretdinova

Join our October Member Meeting to meet artist and muralist, Asiya Nuretdinova, and hear about her journey, starting with being born in the USSR. Her story highlights the resilience of generations to overcome the iron fist of Communism and its limitations to finding complete freedom of expression.

Her website is www.artbyasiya.com
Instagram is www.instagram.com/artbyasiya1

Bio:
As an artist born and raised in St. Petersburg, Russia, Asiya's passion for painting and art has been a lifelong journey. She began her artistic pursuits by attending art school in her hometown and later worked in museums as a tour guide for over three years, gaining a deep appreciation for the art of the past.

In 2019, she decided to pursue her own artistic path, focusing on painting landscapes and cityscapes in a photorealistic style. Through her work, she aims to capture the beauty and essence of the world around her, paying close attention to the intricate details that often go unnoticed.

Since then, she has had the honor of participating in numerous exhibits throughout the United States, showcasing her talent and passion for art to a wider audience. Her paintings have been praised for their realism and depth, evoking a sense of wonder and awe in those who view them.

For Asiya, art is not just a hobby or a career; it is a way of life. Through her work, she strives to inspire others to see the beauty in the world around them and to appreciate the intricate details that make life so rich and fulfilling.

The meeting will be held Tuesday October 20th from 6 pm - 8 pm.

September Member Meeting

In September, Laura Spector led our members in an exploration about how to use it AI thoughtfully—embracing its strengths without sacrificing curiosity, human connection, or the meaningful processes that give creative work its meaning. Ultimately, this was a conversation about the kind of artists and humans we choose to become.

Creative Play

Creative play isn’t frivolous—it’s fuel. It’s where artists rediscover joy, writers loosen the grip of perfection, and makers of all kinds reconnect with the part of themselves that loves to explore. All we truly need is the chance to engage.

We had plenty of that at WiVLA’s Creative Play Retreat, held September 11–13 at Jordan Ranch. Over three restorative days, members immersed themselves in hands‑on activities, gentle movement, and shared creative discovery.

Attendees enjoyed a rich variety of experiences, including:

  • OuiSi practice with Kat McDaniel

  • Meditation with Denise Bossarte (including a first‑ever pool meditation!)

  • Yoga with Kathi Crawford

  • Encaustic printing with Susan Salter

  • Blackout Poetry with Brooke Summers‑Perry

  • Haiku Poetry with Denise Bossarte

  • SoulCollage® with Denise Bossarte

Members received commemorative tote bags—thank you, Elissa Davis!—and had the chance to win tote bags filled with creative goodies, including tie‑dyed socks made just for the occasion.

One of WiVLA’s greatest strengths is the way our members uplift one another with laughter, shared discoveries, and conversations that remind us why creative community matters. This retreat offered a joyful, relaxing pause from our non‑stop lives, and a chance to reconnect with what inspires us.

Deep appreciation to all the facilitators who shared their talents, and to every attendee who made the retreat so special.

We’re already looking forward to next year!

Maryanne Langford Keeling is a fine art photographer and mixed-media artist whose work explores light, atmosphere, beauty, and a strong sense of place. She is a native South Carolinian who divides her time between Charleston, South Carolina and Houston, Texas. Maryanne brings more than three decades of professional photographic experience to a body of work inspired by landscapes, wildlife, architecture, florals, and the quiet details discovered through travel.

Keeling's photography encompasses both color and infrared black-and-white imagery. In color she is drawn to the richness and subtlety of natural light. Her infrared work transforms familiar landscapes into luminous, often dreamlike interpretations beyond normal human vision. Across both approaches she seeks moments when light, composition, and subject come together to reveal something deeper than simple documentation...something that inspires feeling.

Her mixed-media artwork begins with subjects she has personally photographed. These images may be digitally extracted, layered, or composited before being printed on canvas and finished by hand with acrylics or water-soluble oils. This process allows her to combine photography, digital artistry, and traditional painting while maintaining an authentic connection to the original subject.

Maryanne is especially drawn to subjects that suggest endurance, history, grace, and timeless beauty-from centuries-old live oaks and coastal marshes to birds, ancient architecture, mountain landscapes, and weathered doorways. Her goal is to create work that draws the viewer in, encourages a moment of pause, and inspires a deeper appreciation for the beauty that so often surrounds us unnoticed.

She holds Master of Photography and Master Artist degrees, along with the Imaging Excellence Award, and has received numerous honors through professional and international photographic competition. Her photographic and painted works have been juried into exhibitions and galleries across the country.

Nancy Glass had this short piece come out in the Brevity Blog on August 12th, about creating/finding a cohort of women with whom to begin a daily writing habit.

Shirley Beyer’s painting, “Busy City at Sunset,” was juried into Winter Street’s “HeART of Houston” show. The show can be seen throughout the second floor of Winter Street Studios in Sawyer Yards until October 31.

WORTH: Excavated presents a new body of large-scale abstract paintings by Houston artist Cheryl Russell, on view October 3 through 28 at West Gallery at Silver Street Studios in Sawyer Yards. The work excavates the contracts we inherit before we know we have a choice, the quiet rules around gender, family, and silence that shape who we're told to become. Layered, built, buried, and revealed again, each painting holds what isn't immediately visible, asking the viewer to slow down and look twice.

This is the most confident and colorful work of Russell's career, marking a clear shift in scale and voice. Visitors will see monumental paintings built to be lived with, not glanced at. The exhibition invites collectors and visitors alike to consider their own inherited stories and which ones are still worth keeping.

RSVP’s appreciated.

Synkroniciti is Open
for Written and Visual Art Submissions
Synkroniciti invites literary, visual, and performing artists to explore the concept of technology.

Technology is more than inventions and gadgetry; it is a growing architecture that shapes how we imagine, create, and connect. It builds new structures around our lives—some supportive, some restrictive—and invites us to navigate spaces that are constantly being redesigned.

It can illuminate hidden worlds, extend our senses, and open pathways to collaboration across distance and difference. At the same time, it can overwhelm, isolate, and erode the very qualities that make us human.

We are drawn to work that investigates the paradoxes of technological life: the exhilaration of discovery alongside the fatigue of constant innovation, the intimacy of digital community alongside the fragility of privacy, the promise of empowerment alongside the risk of exploitation.

For this issue, we invite you to consider technology as both mirror and catalyst. How does it reflect our desires and fears? How does it transform our relationships with memory, imagination, and one another? What new myths and metaphors emerge from our entanglement with machines, networks, and code?

We seek art that questions, celebrates, critiques, and reimagines technology—not as a monolith, but as shifting terrain where creativity and caution must coexist.
